THE ST. ANDREW'S SOCIETY Of WINNIPEG HOSTS THE GREAT CANADIAN KILT SKATE

All are welcome at the St. Andrew's Society of Winnipeg's Great Canadian Kilt Skate to be held in Assiniboine Park at the Riley Duck Pond on February 26, 2023, from 1 to 3 pm. It's a FREE event.

skater

“You don't have to be Scottish, wear a kilt, a tartan or even plaid to come out for a skate – whether it's 10 minutes or two hours. And we won't ask if you like the bagpipes or have ever tried haggis," said Evelyn Mitchell, past president of the Society and this year's organizer.

Members of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada will join the event, all decked out in their kilt uniforms, regardless of rain or shine, snowfall, blizzard, or whiteout.

"Last year, the temperature was at least -30C, and several of our soldiers joined the event with our kilts, uniforms, and bare legs, carrying flags and socializing with the participants. Despite the cold, it was great fun. We certainly look forward to coming out again this year to join everyone at the Kilt Skate,” said Lieutenant Colonel Jon Baker, Commanding Officer of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada.

If you can't make the event on February 26, please participate in the Home Edition any time before February 26 at any skating surface in the province and post a photo or video of your skate on social media. Please hashtag social media posts with #KiltSkate2023WPG to be included in Winnipeg's entry in the contest to determine the 2023 Great Canadian Kilt Skate Capital of Canada.

The event will begin with a ribbon cutting by Cathy Laver-Wright, who has been doing the Home Edition of the Kilt Skate daily. The Pop-Up Piper will be there, and hot chocolate will be served. The Great Canadian Kilt Skate was started in 2015 by the Scottish Society of Ottawa and is held in several other Canadian cities than Winnipeg, Antigonish, Montreal, Ottawa, Brampton, Toronto, Saskatoon, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Vancouver. It has extended to countries like Australia and the US and is called the Great Kilt Skate. Winnipeg won the title of The Great Canadian Kilt Skate in 2021.

The Strathcona Cup 2023

  • Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Once every ten years, Canada plays host to the world’s oldest international men’s curling bonspiel, the “Strathcona Cup.” SASOW is pleased to provide a grant to this event. Now in its 120th year, the next Strathcona Cup will be competed for in January 2023. The Western Canadian group of five Scottish teams will visit Winnipeg on January 28 and 29, 2023. They will play games at the Fort Rouge, Granite, Pembina and Deer Lodge Curling Clubs.

This month-long curling bonspiel brings together 15 men’s curling teams from Scotland to play against our very own in curling centres from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Victoria, British Columbia. The competition involves three distinct tours (Western, Central and Eastern Canadian tours). Twenty Scottish curlers will be on each tour.

With support from the Royal Caledonia Curling Club and Curling Canada, the event is managed and operated by curlers who were fortunate enough to participate in the 2018 competition that traversed the country of Scotland. The Chair of the 2023 tour is the former Curling Canada Board Chair, John Shea.

The 2023 Strathcona Cup tour (Western Tour) will begin in Vancouver on January 1, 2023, and pass-through Vancouver Island, Kelowna, Vernon, Edmonton, Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay before hosting the final closing event for all 60 Scottish curlers in Ottawa, February 3, 2023.
