The St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg (SASOW) will once again celebrate Victoria Day with a special performance by its popular “Pop-up Piper” on Monday, May 18 at 1:00 p.m. beside the Queen Victoria Statue in Assiniboine Park’s English Garden.

"Few venues in Winnipeg offer the natural beauty of 'Spring' more than the English Garden in Assiniboine Park," said Society President Dwight MacAulay. "Victoria Day offers a moment to pause and reflect on our shared history, and the sound of the pipes always brings that history to life in a powerful, memorable way.”

The featured performer will be Matthew Owen Hunt of the Lord Selkirk Robert Fraser Memorial Pipe Band. At just 17 years old, he has already showcased his talent with the bagpipes at a number of events, including the world-renowned Rose Bowl Parade.

“There’s something unmistakable about the sound of a single piper in a public space — it stops people, draws them in, and creates a shared moment,” said MacAulay. "SASOW is excited to continue to celebrate our country’s rich multicultural heritage and youth with a series of Pop-up-Piper performances throughout the summer.”

The Pop-up Piper series has become a signature SASOW initiative, blending cultural celebration with accessible public programming. Additional summer performance dates and locations will be announced in the coming weeks, and all performances are free and open to the public.
